Our History
Our history in Napier goes back to The Napier Community Trust Hospital, which was formed on the 20 August 1970, with the purpose of establishing a private hospital in Napier to serve Hawke’s Bay. That aim was achieved, and a hospital was established and named the Princess Alexandra Hospital, in recognition of the Princess’ assistance in fund raising efforts.
In the 1980s it became apparent that some $2.2 million was needed to upgrade the hospital to meet advances in medical standards and technology. The Trust did not have the necessary funds. The Trustees decided that a more efficient use of the Trust’s funds was to fund the provision of care to the community, rather than directly to provide it. Accordingly, the Trust sold the Princess Alexandra Hospital to the Southern Cross Medical Care Society. A 50% share was initially sold, but the whole hospital was sold by October 1988.
On the 18 November 1998 a new Deed of Declaration of Trust, being The Princess Alexandra Medical Trust, was declared and so The Princess Alexandra Medical Trust was formed. Buckingham Palace (on 23 May 1996) gave approval to this new name. Because the Trust was no longer running a hospital, it was desired that Trustees at that time and in the future be representative of the Hawkes Bay community.
